MAN CHARGED WITH PRODUCING CHILD ABUSE MATERIAL

A 49-year-old man will face Moree Local Court in June, charged with producing child abuse material. Police arrested the man on Monday, following an investigation into reports a 15-year-old was filmed in the shower. Officers siezed computers and electronic storage devices that allegedly contained footage of young children. The man was granted bail to appear in court on June 1.

WATER SKI WAIT ALMOST OVER

After more than five years of planning, construction has finally started on Moree’s new water ski park. The $4-million project will include a 1.2-kilometre circuit lake, enabling the facility to host state and national competitions. It will also make use of recycled water from Moree’s artesian baths. The park is expected to open in March.

ALLEGED MOREE MURDERER REFUSED BAIL

A farmer accused of murdering an unarmed environment officer in the north west, has been refused bail in the New South Wales Supreme court. 79-year-old Ian Turnbull allegedly shot and killed Glen Turner at the back of a property near Moree in July. Prosecutors say it was the culmination of a land-clearing dispute that had been simmering for years. The court today heard that Turnbull had told his wife he “simply cracked”. But Acting Justice Anthony Blackmore believed he would pose a danger to officials and the public if released on bail, saying there was still evidence Turnbull maintained his “vendetta” against the state’s environment authorities.

UPDATED: ENVIRONMENT OFFICER SHOT DEAD ON RURAL PROPERTY

A 79-year-old Moree man has been charged with murder, after a New South Wales Environment and Heritage officer was shot dead on a rural property late yesterday. The officer was serving a notice at the property with a colleague in relation to the clearing of vegetation when he was shot dead. The body of the 51-year-old father of six was found on the Croppa Creek property by police. Moree Plains Shire mayor Katrina Humphries says environmental issues such as land clearing have been a source of frustration in the community. “This is why I say, and I am not saying it flippantly and I mean it, I am not surprised this has happened,” she said. “Because I know people have been pushed and pushed and pushed.” Meanwhile Environmment Minister Rob Stokes says he’s saddened by the death of the man …

Moree Plains Shire Council says the appointment of Qantas link as the town’s permanent air carrier will restore faith in the local business sector. The airline stepped in to assist after Brindabella Airlines collapsed late last year.

FIRETRUCK LOST IN FLAMES

Firefighters from Moree escaped serious injury last night, when their truck was engulfed in flames while fighting a grass fire. Fire and Rescue NSW were protecting properties in Greenbah Road and had parked their truck on one of the threatened properties, when a wind change swung the fire directly onto the vehicle. Firefighters adondened the truck and sought refuge nearby. Commissioner Greg Mullins says the incident highlights the extreme conditions in which firefighters work. “Trucks and equipment can be replaced but people cannot and I am thankful that no-one has been injured in this incident”, he said. MAN DEAD AFTER HORROR SMASH NEAR MOREE

One man is dead and another is in a critical condition following a horrific crash along the Carnarvon Highway near Moree overnight. Police were attempting to catch up with pair after they travelled past a stationary RBT unit, when the Holden sedan they were travelling in left the road, hitting a tree. Both men were thrown from the vehicle after it split in two on impact. A Moree man believed to be in his 20s died at the scene, while a 24-year-old man was flown to John Hunter Hospital suffering critical injuries. A Critical Incident Investigation Team is examining the circumstances behind the fatal accident. The Carnarvon Highway is closed in both directions between the Newell Highway and Billa Street while officers investigate the scene.

PLANE CRASH CLAIMS FOUR LIVES

Four people are dead and two others are seriously injured following a light-plane crash at Moree. A man, woman and two others were found dead inside the Cessna wreckage after is crashed in a paddock on Blueberry Road near the Moree airport shortly after 8pm tonight. The Cessna had flown from Brewarrina with six people onbaord. A 12-year-old girl and a 40-year-old man were freed from the light-plane and taken to Moree Hospital with serious injuries. Police have established a crime scene and forensic specialists are on their way from Inverell. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau have been notified and will begin investigations into the cause of the crash in the morning.
