One man is dead and another is in a critical condition following a horrific crash along the Carnarvon Highway near Moree overnight.
Police were attempting to catch up with pair after they travelled past a stationary RBT unit, when the Holden sedan they were travelling in left the road, hitting a tree.
Both men were thrown from the vehicle after it split in two on impact.
A Moree man believed to be in his 20s died at the scene, while a 24-year-old man was flown to John Hunter Hospital suffering critical injuries.
A Critical Incident Investigation Team is examining the circumstances behind the fatal accident.
The Carnarvon Highway is closed in both directions between the Newell Highway and Billa Street while officers investigate the scene.
