JOEL PARKINSON TO RETIRE FROM SURFING’S WORLD TOUR

Australian pro-surfer Joel Parkinson has announced this will be his last year on surfing’s world tour, making the announcement in a post on Instagram earlier today. The 2012 world champion and Tweed Heads local will retire at the conclusion of the Pipe Masters event in Hawaii in December, 19-years after winning his first world tour event at Jeffreys Bay. Parkinson, who won Newcastle’s Surfest event in 2013, has claimed 11 world tour event wins as well as finished as runner up on the world tour on four occasions. WALLABIES CONTINUE HOME-SOIL DOMINANCE OVER IRELAND

David Pocock has starred for the Wallabies as they overcame World Number 2, Ireland in Brisbane. Pocock scored a try of his own, as well as bringing about a series of important turnovers at the breakdown. The 18-9 win maintaining Australia’s home soil dominance over the Irish, having not lost a game for 39-years. The side now travels to Melbourne for the second test.

BILLY SLATER RULED OUT OF STATE OF ORIGIN OPENER

UPDATE: Billy Slater has officially been ruled out of the opening game of State of Origin. ——- EARLIER: Reports are emerging Queensland fullback Billy Slater is in serious doubt for Wednesday’s opening State of Origin match, after re-injuring his hamstring. Slater didn’t train early last week as he battled the hamstring problem, and is believed to have injured it again at training yesterday. Slater’s absence would be a huge blow for Queensland, who are already without the retired Cameron Smith, Johnathan Thurston and Cooper Cronk. It’s understood Newcastle fullback Kalyn Ponga and Brisbane five-eighth Anthony Milford will join the squad in Melbourne as cover.
