VOLUNTEERS HELPING TO IMPROVE STUDENT LITERACY SKILLS

We know them as the friendly people helping the sick or injured at public events, but St John Ambulance volunteers can do far more than slap on a Bandaid. The charity also runs a program which helps to give children some of the most important skills in life, the ability to read and write. GIRL SEVERELY INJURED IN UMINA DOG ATTACK

A nine-year-old girl sustained severe facial injuries, when mauled by a Rottweiler at Umina Beach. The attack happened when the young girl was playing in her front yard. The dog, which belonged to a neighbour, entered the property and attacked, injuring the girls right cheek and lips. She is recovering in Westmead Children’s Hopsital, and an application has been made to have the dog destroyed.

FOUR MOTORCYCLISTS INJURED IN CALGA CRASH

A woman has been critically injured in a crash involving three motorcycles on the Old Pacific Highway at Calga. Two bikes heading north collided with a southbound motorcycle, which had the female pillion passenger onboard. Her leg was almost severed by the impact. Three others, all men, escaped with non life-threatening injuries. Police say it appears the bike travelling south had crossed to the wrong side of the road.
