GREAT WHITE SHARK LEAPS OUT OF THE WATER JUST METRES FROM NSW SURFER

A great white shark has been photographed jumping out of the water off the New South Wales coast – as a local surfer obliviously rode a wave just metres away. Daniel Caban, a 20-year-old university student, was paddling onto a wave at Caves Beach, south of Newcastle, just moments before the shark breached the water about 2pm yesterday. “It was just me and one other guy out there,” “A big set came through, he got the first one, I got the second one, but neither of us had any idea what happened.” Mr Caban said the reality of his proximity to the predator still hadn’t sunk in. “I’ve never seen a shark in the water before,” he said. “Everyone else around here has their shark stories, but I’d never seen one. I guess I still haven’t, but I’ve definitely got …

SES RECEIVES ALMOST 300 CALL-OUTS OVERNIGHT

New South Wales and Queensland emergency services have already responded to almost 300 call-outs overnight, as severe storms bear down on the state’s entire coast, stretching up to south-east Queensland. The emergency services body praised the proactive behaviour of residents who requested assistance with setting up sandbags and their homes in preparation for heavy rainfall and possible flash flooding. The area around the QLD-NSW border is expected to be the worst hit. Severe weather warnings and several flood warnings remain in place, with authorities urging those caught up in the storm to exercise caution and not to take any chances with floodwaters. “If the road has markers up against it saying do …

There are substantial traffic delays southbound on the M1 near Newcastle after a truck rolled and caught alight about 2am. Emergency crews arrived at the Pacific Highway in Freemans Waterhole about 2.20am after a semi-trailer carrying Oregon pine slabs failed to negotiate a left hand bend and overturned. The truck burst into flames and the 59-year-old driver escaped with only minor chest injuries. Paramedics took the man to John Hunter Hospital. A NSW Rural Fire Service spokesman said motorists could expect lengthy delays while the scene was cleared. “Crews worked really hard to extinguish the fire, the truck was carrying timber,” spokesman Jason Millar told reporters. “Crews continued throughout the morning to extinguish the load and contain the diesel spill.” Mr Millar said the scene would take a while to clear while crews ensured the area was safe. “Delays will …
