Rewind Series 3 Episode 21 – Communications and Early Computers

An expanding population, called for the need of a capable telephone network.

Early facilities, like the Boolaroo exchange, required switchboard operators to establish phone call connections.

As technology advanced, modern centres opened, including Hamilton, by the postmaster general

It was the beginning of the transition to automated switching systems. 

Newcastle post office was a hive of activity too, letters and parcels were sorted for distribution.

It was mid December 1970, and the Christmas rush was on!

Our cameras also captured the installation of new computer systems.

At the BHP in Mayfield, Hunter Valley County Council in Maitland, and the University of Newcastle.

New Technology to benefit the community, as seen in our early years of broadcast.
