Rewind Series 3 Episode 17 – Newcastle Harbour

Our thanks to the Glamx Lab of University of Newcastle and The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia for digitising our early years.

During the 1960, Newcastle was on a path of industrial expansion.

The deepening of the Harbour was a priority.

Silt was pumped from the river bed, and used to reclaim land, at Kooragang.

A new island for economic development, plus a deeper channel meant easier access for shipping.

Better for exports including coal and grain.

The development of Newcastle Harbour. From construction and industry..to recreation and education.

An important time in our history, and viewers saw it all through the lens of our NBN film cameras.
