SEVEN NORTHERN RIVERS RESIDENTS RECOGNISED ON AUSTRALIA DAY

Seven Northern Rivers residents were recognised with Australia Day honours, for their contributions to everything from medicine, to netball. Evans Head resident Forbes Murdoch was recognised for his contribution to the sheep industry – pilot Bill Kiernan was awarded for services to the aviation community. While, Lismore woman Judy Atkinson was honoured for her significant service to the Indigenous community, education and to mental health. The Emeritus Professor, who is passionate about working with children, says conversation is key to closing the gap. (AUDIO IN PARTS)

MAN STABLE FOLLOWING BENTLEY ROAD CRASH

A man in his 60s was yesterday flown to hospital, following a single vehicle crash at Bentley west of Lismore. Emergency services were called to Bentley Road on Monday afternoon, following reports a car had left the road. The Lismore based Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter was called in to transport the man, who’d suffered numerous lacerations as well as an injury to his ankle in the crash. He was flown to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.

DROUGHT RELIEF FUNDS BEGIN TO FLOW FOR NORCO FARMERS

More than 190 NORCO farmers will see some much needed drought assistance as Coles begins to distribute its drought relief fund. Between September and December last year, customers paid an extra 30 cents for a bottle of Coles 3 litre milk – raising $3.9-million. Recognising members were being burdened with extra work due to the drought, NORCO help a large number of their members apply for a share of the money. “It’s still very very dry and farmers are still buying a lot of feed and even now buying water for all their stock so it’s a good outcome at the moment.” – Greg McNamara – NORCO Director All 639 eligible applicants across Australia will receive an equal share of the total amount raised – a little over $6000. TWO MEN RESCUED AFTER BOAT ROLLS CROSSING BALLINA BAR

There was a lucky escape for two men on the state’s far north coast today, after their boat overturned at the entrance to the Richmond River. The Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter was among a number of emergency services called to East Ballina, after reports a boat had rolled while crossing the Ballina bar. Both men were plucked from the water by a passing charter boat. Neither were injured.

RICHMOND VALLEY RESIDENTS HIT WITH WATER RESTRICTIONS

Richmond Valley residents are the latest to be hit with water restrictions. Level 1 restrictions will come into effect from next Wednesday, with Council putting it down to low rainfall and falling river levels. Residents are banned from using sprinklers and fixed hoses between 8am and 4pm, with some minor exemptions. Council is reminding everyone to be water-wise during the dry period. (VISION ONLY)

RICHMOND VALLEY COUNCIL LEADS CLASS ACTION ON INSURANCE PROVIDER

Richmond Valley Council says it’s been ripped-off hundreds of thousands of dollars by a multi-national insurance provider. Seven councils in New South Wales have teamed up to launch a class action against Jardine Lloyd Thompson Pty Ltd, alleging they’ve been slogged with excessive premiums. Richmond Valley Council’s General Manager Vaughan Macdonald says in the year since council parted ways with the insurance provider, taxpayers have saved $300,000. He’s hoping the class action will see JLT return millions-of-dollars he says it made in profit. (VISION ONLY)
