GREYHOUND CULL REPORT “VALIDATES” STATE’S BAN

Nationals leader and Deputy Premier Troy Grant says an independent report into greyhound cruelty, that found 100 dogs had been killed and buried in the Hunter Valley, validates the state’s ban on the sport.

Sydney Barrister Clive Steirn’s investigation found underperforming greyhounds were either shot or clubbed to death and buried in mass graves at Keinbah near Cessnock.

His report also found 95 per cent of dogs exhumed, were healthy before they were killed, most likely between 2009 and 2013.

“Logically, the only probable motive for culling greyhounds in these circumstances leads to a conclusion the animals were being killed for no other reason than that they were found to be underperforming after being trialled, and therefore of no further use,” Mr Steirn SC said on Wednesday.

The site has been previously investigated and Mr Steirn has recommended that Greyhound Racing New South Wales consider taking action against individuals who may have given false or misleading information to earlier investigations.

Troy Grant says the state’s ban on greyhound racing was the right thing to do.

“I’m horrified by these allegations and now this is a matter for our prosecuting authorities to consider,” he said.

Greyhound Racing New South Wales says any acts of cruelty if proven, cannot go unanswered.
