Family of seven facing life on the street after lease terminated

A NSW family of seven are about to be homeless after their current landlord booted them out of the house they’ve been living in for the past five years.

Brittany Davis, her partner and their five children had set down roots in Scone, in the state’s upper Hunter Valley, when they were issued a no-grounds termination at the end of last year.

Now, with still no place to move into, the family have to be out of the property by Monday.

“We were given a 90-day termination back in November and have been trying constantly from there, through real estate and private rentals to find somewhere else, but there’s just no luck,” Brittany told Today.

She said she and her partner are just trying to go about their day-to-day lives for the sake of the kids, while they still have a roof over their heads.

But come the end of the weekend – the family don’t know where they are going to end up.

“It is really expensive out there and there are lots of other families looking for somewhere to rent,” she said.

“We’re going to put all our furniture into storage over the weekend and then hopefully we can either get emergency accommodation or we’ll just have to bunk in with some family.”

While there is a small amount of assistance offered to families in Brittany’s situation, she said there isn’t a lot they can do under current regulations, until it’s too late.

“There’s a little bit of help out there, but they kind of won’t do anything until you are homeless,” she said.

“So, because we still have a roof and a house until Monday, they don’t really do anything until we have nowhere to go.”
