NEW MEASURES TO REDUCE SHARK ATTACKS

The state government is set to announce new measures to reduce the number of shark attacks, following a spate of incidents in northern New South Wales.

The $250,000 public awareness campaign will see problem sharks tagged and monitored from Monday.

Ballina Shire Mayor David Wright says he’s happy the Department of Primary Industries is responding to the community’s concerns.

A surfer was fatally attacked at Shelley Beach in February, while 11 others have been bitten in the months since, including two serious attacks last month.

Many surfers in the state have called for a partial shark cull, however the animal rights group, No Shark Cull, says it’s “unacceptable to cull animals that are threatened with extinction”.
