SHARK DRUMLINES INFORMATION SESSIONS

Locals will have the chance this weekend to find out more about the Shark drumlines set to be deployed off beaches from Coffs Harbour to Sawtell. 10 of the drumlines will be put in place from next week for a 6 month trial, as part of the state government’s shark management strategy. The Department of Primary Industries claims the drumlines are four times more effective than mesh nets, with minimal by-catch. Information sessions are being held tomorrow at the Coffs Harbour Surf Club from 9 to 2, and at the Sawtell Surf Club from 8 till 1 on Sunday.   (Vision Only)

SHARK WATCH LAUNCHES IN BYRON BAY

A volunteer shark spotter program which aims to monitor beaches and alert surfers to any danger will run over the summer holidays at a Byron Bay Beach. The funding announcement comes amid ongoing debate about what should be done to prevent further shark attacks on the North Coast.

BYRON MAYOR BACKS SHARK SPOTTERS

Byron Shire Mayor Simon Richardson has labelled the state government’s shark net trial along the coastline, a knee-jerk response. “We shouldn’t be panicking and shouldn’t be reacting purely through emotion.” “Tourists who come to Byron, come to Byron because it’s a place of difference. It’s a place which is very proud to say we want to coexist with our natural environment and we love it.” Mayor Richardson believes the government should instead fund non-lethal shark spotting programs in the region. Byron Shire beaches reopened early this morning, following yesterday’s attack on 36 year old Jade Fitzpatrick. The incident at Broken Head, was the third along the stretch within a month.
