NEWCASTLE COUNCIL WON’T CHANGE MIND ON POOL HOURS

Newcastle Council won’t be changing its mind over reduced pool hours at some of its centres, despite ongoing community protests.

Council says losses at the five affected pools totalled $2.1-million last year, despite improved attendances.

The changes were implemented as part of a budget plan last month.

  1. Look at the money they are spending of Merewether Baths when they have a gorgeous beach right there….I think it is really unfair to the swim club…swimming classes and the kids that want to cool off after school….yes there is a pool at Maitland but with this area being the largest growing area in NSW how is everyone from Branxton to Tarro going to fit inside Maitland pool…Geoff McCloy should get out in the suburbs and talk to the rate payers….Kim Sandford

  2. These people on Council should be ashamed. The only place kids learn to swim is in a pool…whether public or private. They don’t learn to swim at either N’cle or M’wther ocean baths. They don’t learn to swim at the beach. Council, in particular, 6 councillors + lord mayor are denying the children of Beresfield the opportunity to enjoy and be confident in the water. It should NOT be about $$$$. The number of infant drownings has risen…shouldn’t we and the council be encouraging people to use the pool not slam the door on us. The pool is a community asset….next it will be the libraries. Drop the price as a trial for 8 weeks and see what happens. TALK to the community.

  3. What a shame for the community of Beresfield! Opening hours should not be determined by economics only – look out, Ken Goldthorpe would probably close the pool down if he could.
