ARTEFACTS FOUND ON STOCKTON BEACH AFTER WILD WEATHER

When wild seas lashed the east coast a fortnight ago Stockton Beach, a 32 kilometre stretch of sand, north of Newcastle popular with four wheel drivers and campers got hammered.

Large inland lakes pooled behind the dunes, and crumbling edges and cut outs made beach access tricky.
The National Parks and Wildlife Service closed the beach for recreational access.

The wild weather also uncovered large traces of early aboriginal land use, including shell middens.

The traditional owners, the Worimi people and NPWS rangers went onto the Dunes today for an enviromental evaluation. NBN News reporter Stepanie Jeanes, cameraman Dan Loh and University of Newcastle intern Nicole Wilson were there in
what is still wild and windy weather. Full report in tonight’s news at six.
