The Minister for Education, Adrian Piccoli, has announced the amalgamation of Gateshead and Gateshead West primary schools.
“Fifteen years ago Gateshead Public School and Gateshead West Public School each had close to 200 students,” said Mr Piccoli.
“Today there are 130 students at Gateshead Public and 90 at Gateshead West, with projections over the next four years only suggesting a total increase of about twenty.
“Therefore after the community raised the possibility of looking at the benefits of merger in March 2010, it was something we had to consider seriously, and consultation with staff and community showed a significant majority in favour.”
