EVERINGHAM MAKING A SPLASH AT AUS TITLES

Port Macquarie swimmer Mekayla Everingham has missed out on qualifying for the World Titles in the 100 metre breaststroke. The 19-year-old placed 12th in her preliminary heat at the Australian Championships this morning. It followed an impressive 8th place finish in last night’s 50 metre final. Everingham will have one last shot at qualifying in the 200 metre breaststroke on Wednesday.

SUPERHEROES TEACH SWIM SAFETY

Superheroes in speedos have taught some of the Far North Coast’s smallest swimmers, a potentially life-saving lesson. The youngsters were shown what to do in an emergency, during a colourful water safety class this morning. “A lot of kids have pools, beaches lakes, even bathtubs and their getting cool for the summer, so we definitely need to promote it.” The class was held at the Goonellabah Sports and Aquatic Centre, as part of ‘National Swim Safer’ week. WINTER WHALES DISTRIBUTES DONATIONS

Byron Bay’s Winter Whales swimming club has handed out $50,000 to local charities and community groups in need. The money was raised at the club’s 29th annual ocean swim classic, held in the waters off Cape Byron in May. Since the event began, the club has donated over three quarters of a million dollars. WOBBEGONG BITES BOY AT BYRON BAY

A 12-year-old boy is tonight nursing a sore foot after he was bitten by what’s been confirmed as a Wobbegong, swimming near the wreck at Byron Bay. The incident happened just before 1PM, with the boy able to make it to shore where he was treated by lifeguards. “The guys did all the required first aid. It wasn’t bleeding a lot or anything like that there were just a few small marks and a slight bit of blood.” His parents then took him to the Byron District Hospital where he was checked over, then discharged a short time later.
