TEEN CHARGED AFTER LATE NIGHT ROBBERY AT EAST MAITLAND

A 14-year-old boy has been charged with aggravated robbery, after two teenagers were robbed and assaulted in the Hunter Valley. Police have been told a 17-year-old and a 15-year-old boy were walking across the footbridge at Victoria Street train station just before 10 o’clock on Saturday night, when they were approached by a group of young people. It’s alleged the group stole property from the pair, as well as assaulted the younger teen. A 14-year-old was later arrested and taken to Maitland Police Station where he was charged. He was granted conditional bail and will face East Maitland Children’s Court next Friday.

BODY FOUND INSIDE BURNT OUT HUNTER HOME

The body of a man has been located inside a burnt out home in the Hunter region. Emergency services were called to an address on Thompson Street at East Maitland at around 2 o’clock on Saturday morning, following reports of a fire. Crews managed to extinguish the blaze inside the unit, however the body of a 53-year-old man was located inside. Initial investigations suggest the fire was not suspicious. Stephen Mount reports.

MAN ARRESTED AFTER EIGHT HOUR SIEGE IN TELARAH

A man has been arrested, after an eight-hour siege in a Telarah home on Friday night. Police were called to Brooks Street shortly after 7 o’clock, following reports of concern for a man’s welfare. The 39-year old was found outside, armed with knives after leaving a nearby mental health unit. He surrendered peacefully to officers at 5 o’clock Saturday morning. HUNTER WORKER ATTACKED BY THREE MASKED MEN

A man in the Hunter Valley has non life-threatening injuries, after an aggravated break and enter near Maitland early this morning. Police say three males forced entry to a licenced premises in Greta, before striking the man with a baseball bat and threatening him with a gun. Several items were taken, including a mobile phone and laptop. The males are described as wearing jumpers with their faces covered, and fled the scene in a dark coloured dual cab utility.

KNIFE WIELDING MAN CHARGED OVER MORPETH HOLD UP

An East Maitland man has been charged with attempted armed robbery after allegedly trying to hold up the Spar supermarket in Morpeth last night. Police say a 19-year-old entered the store at 7pm wielding a knife and threatening a staff member and an off duty employee. But was not his lucky day, one man behind the counter punched the offender in the face and tried to knock the knife out of his hands. The other man grabbed him in a head lock until until police arrived. The teen was given bail to appear in court again in February.

Hair salon Shear Abilities is fully accessible, with ramps and hoists as well as other features to cater for individual needs. Today it hosted a celebration for International Day of People with a Disability, encouraging other businesses to be more inclusive.
