NELSON BAY MAN IN JAIL AFTER BREACHING COVID-19 HEALTH ORDERS

A permit check at Albury on the Hume Highway last night has exposed several public health order breaches by a single Port Stephens man.

The 49-year-old from Nelson Bay travelled to Victoria on Saturday, but didn’t have a current permit to re-enter New South Wales when police stopped him at the border around 9:30pm on Monday.

When officers investigated further, they found the man had previously re-entered New South Wales from Victoria on July 19 and was directed to self-isolate in his Nelson Bay home.

He was found to be breaching that self-isolation directive on July 23, when local police conducted a compliance check and were unable to find him.

When officers spoke to the man about this breach last night, he allegedly became aggressive and argumentative.

He then allegedly resisted arrest and refused to comply with directions.

After being arrested, he was taken to Albury Police Station, where he was seen throwing an item into a rubbish bin, which police allege was a satchel of cannabis.

He was subsequently charged with two counts of resisting an officer in execution of duty, not complying with noticed direction and possessing a prohibited drug.

The man’s been refused bail to appear in Albury Local Court today.
