Investigation underway after police shoot armed man in NSW town

The shooting of an armed man by a NSW Police officer has been described as “tragic” for the officers involved, the victim’s family and the community in the state’s north-west.

Police said the 48-year-old man went to Tenterfield Police Station and pointed a firearm at officers before he was shot about 6pm on Thursday.

There was a conflict out the front of the Tenterfield Police Station, which lead to an officer shooting the man.

Police and NSW ambulance paramedics tried to save the man but he died at the scene.

Acting commander Steve Egginton said police had no other option but to shoot the man.

“Police were called to a job in regards to a concern for the welfare of this particular individual, they have responded to that and it has ended up in a set of circumstances where there was a conflict out front of the Tenterfield Police Station,” Egginton said.

Steve Egginton said police had no other option but to shoot the man.

Police will investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the discharge of a police firearm.

That investigation will be subject to independent review.
