Second man charged over alleged $20m Newcastle drug import after diver’s death

A second man has been charged over an alleged $20 million cocaine importation as a probe into the death of a diver in Newcastle continues.

Professional scuba diver Bruno Borges Martins was found unresponsive in the Hunter River with 54 kilograms of cocaine nearby on May 9, police allege.

Police investigating the alleged smuggling operation and the 31-year-old Brazillian’s death arrested a 20-year-old man in Tweed Heads yesterday.

The 20-year-old has been refused bail and will appear in court later today.

Earlier this year, Queensland superyacht operator James “Jimmy” Blee, 62, was charged with a string of offences over the alleged operation including manslaughter, people smuggling and drug importation.
