WALCHA COMMUNITY STRUGGLING AS BUSY HIGHWAY REMAINS CLOSED

Almost one month after severe weather forced the Oxley Highway’s closure, locals are still waiting for the road to reopen.

The town of Walcha, in particular, is struggling – with no clear indication of when residents can use the once-busy thoroughfare.

A spokesperson for Transport for New South Wales has responded in a statement, saying the Department is “focusing on carrying out temporary works to allow the highway to be progressively reopened to single lane with alternating flow”. It also said the section of highway between Wauchope and Mt Seaview Road is expected to “reopen to all vehicles by mid-May” and that the section between Mt Seaview Road and Ginger’s Creek to “reopen by the end of July, weather permitting.”
