HUNTERVIEW TRUCK DRIVER CHARGED AFTER TRANSPORTING TUMOR RIDDEN COW

The Rural Crime Prevention Team is issung a stern warning to transporters of stock about their duty of care, after a Hunterview man was caught transporting a lame cow that was blinded by seeping tumors on her eyes.

On September 3, police performing Operation Stock Check duties stopped a truck on Putty Road at Milbrodale.

On board hey found a Hereford cow which had tumors on both her left and right eyes, and was visibly lame in her front left leg, not able to bear any weight on it.

The tumor had also completly closed over the cow’s right eye, and both eyes showed significnt discharge.

The 58-year-old driver of the truck was fined $500 for ‘carry/convey animal inflict pain’.

Police would like to remind stock transporters it is the responsibility of any person in charge of an animal or animals not to cause unnecessary harm.

An animal is unfit for any type of land transport if it:

  • is not strong enough to undertake the journey;
  • Cannot walk normally, bearing weight on all legs;
  • is severely emaciated or visibly dehydrated;
  • is suffering from severe visible distress or injury;
  • is in a condition that could cause it increased pain or distress during transport;
  • is blind in both eyes; or
  • is in late pregnancy.
