COUNCIL STUMBLES ACROSS 100-YEAR-OLD TUNNEL DURING ROAD UPGRADE

Construction workers have stumbled upon a hidden tunnel while working on a road in Tamworth today.

The 100-year-old storm water drain and tunnel was unearthed during the upgrading of a water main between Hill and Darling streets.

It’s at least 15 metres deep and features hundreds of bricks – each complete with the fingerprint of its creator.

The discovery has slightly delayed the project, but there’s no plans to demolish the structure.

“It looks like, when they did the job, that a lot of pride was taken. Even down in the hole, it’s as nice as the brick wall on the outside of a house.”

Council says it may even add a 2020 token, to the tunnel.
