There were some nervous moments at Port Stephens overnight, after a bushfire came within metres of homes at Tanilba Bay.
The blaze, which has so far scorched almost 40 hectares, took hold at around 6 o’clock on Friday evening, behind the Tanilba Shores Retirement Village.
Crews worked throughout the night to contain the fire, which was this morning listed as ‘Under Control’.
At its peak, it reached a ‘Watch & Act’ level warning and left residents scrambling as flames reached the back of homes on Tanilba Avenue.
