INTERVIEW: BENNETT SPEAKS ON DRUG INQUIRY

Newcastle coach Wayne Bennett says he’s clueless as to why the Knights are among six clubs implicated in the national drugs in sport scandal.

Addressing the media this morning Bennett said he is not sure what the Australian Crime Commission wants the club to confess to after being informed on Monday they were referred to in the report.

“It’s created a fair bit of angst and frustration by everybody concerned, particularly our club here. They want us to confess to something but we don’t know what we’ve got to confess to.”

” Under the Hunter Sports Regime we have nothing to hide….I’ve been through all my staff, I’ve checked with all the players, whatever they are looking for it hasn’t happened in the last 18 months.”

The club is waiting for more information.

Penrith, Manly, Cronulla, Canberra and North Queensland are the other clubs to so far confirm they’ve been contacted by the NRL.

STATEMENT FROM NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS
The Newcastle Knights have been contacted overnight by the NRL however the Club has no further information or details on the matter.

“Our Club will cooperate with any official enquiry,” CEO Matt Gidley said.

“We maintain full confidence under the management of Wayne Bennett.

“Until we receive further information from the NRL and/or ASADA, there is nothing further we can add.”
