NRL HIGHLIGHTS | KNIGHTS SCORE IMPORTANT ROUND ONE WIN

Knights celebrate a tense victory over the Cronulla Sharks (AAP)

The Newcastle Knights have scored a nail-biting win over the Sharks in their Round One clash at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Almost 22,000 people turned out for the six point win with former Cronulla winger, Edrick Lee scoring the match winning try.

A controversial penalty try to the Sharks with less than 10 minutes remaining left the game on a knife’s edge before Lee picked off a set play, intercepting a Chad Townsend pass and running 85 metres to break the deadlock.

The final score, Knights 14 – Sharks 8.
