FUNDING FOR HISTORIC NEWCASTLE SITES AND PROJECTS
The state government has announced $1.27-million in funding to upgrade some historic sites across Newcastle.
Half a million dollars of that money will be spent on the redevelopment of the iconic Nobby’s Lighthouse, which includes a new picnic area and viewing decks.
Carrington Hydraulic Engine House will also receive $500,000 for restoration works.
It’s the first if its type built in New South Wales and was used to house a hydraulic power system that operated a coal-loading crane, after its construction in 1877.
Other projects to benefit from funding include the launching of the historic William the Fourth steamship, the 2017 Winter Heat Festival and new cricket nets for Carrington.
“It’s great to see this funding being used to restore, protect and maximise public enjoyment of these historical icons of Newcastle .They show how the community can benefit as Newcastle grows and changes,” said Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Catherine Cusack.
