Newcastle Council is facing criticism over its decision to slash the number of weeks its beaches are patrolled, following a near drowning at Newcastle Beach yesterday.
A young woman had to be rescued by a fellow swimmer after becoming caught in a rip.
It follows a decision by the local government commence patrols seven weeks later in an attempt to save money.
