PLUG PULLED ON SHARK FUNDING FOR OCEAN POOL

Ballina Council delegates met with Crown Lands Minister Niall Blair this week to discuss funding options for an ocean pool at Shelly Beach.

Councillor Jeff Johnson, who is spearheading the project, hoped funding for engineering and design reports could be sourced from the State Government’s $16-million Shark Mitigation Strategy.

While the Minister ruled that option out, council says he was supportive of the overall project and encouraged them to apply for grants.

“The Minister certainly thought it was a fantastic thing and it would be great for tourism… But he still said it’s not going to save people and that’s really what that $16 million is for.”

A Lennox Head artist has created a scale image of what the proposed ocean pool could look like.
