NEW NURSERY FOR ASH ISLAND

A new nursery has been established on Ash Island to help volunteers improve diversity at the Hunter River Estuary.

The new facility means locally collected seeds will be able to be nurtured on site.

For the last 18 years plants were propagated at Newcastle council’s greening centre at Kotara.

“It has reinstated vegetation types in the estuary that had been profoundly cleared at European settlement.”

The nursery is part of the ongoing restoration work at the Kooragong Wetland.
