AGL GIVEN GREEN LIGHT TO FRACTURE FOUR WELLS

Energy giant AGL has been given approval to use the controversial process of fracking at four coal seam gas wells at its Gloucester pilot site.

The state’s Office of Coal Seam Gas and the Environment Protection Authority handed down the decision today.

The four wells to be tested are located in stage one of AGL’s Waukivory project, which has a total of 110 wells.

The company’s Managing Director and CEO, Michael Fraser, says the project is an important step in securing a local supply of gas for New South Wales communities and businesses.

“We welcome these approvals from the NSW Government. At present NSW produces less than five percent of its own gas and imports the rest from interstate. However if the Gloucester Gas Project proceeds, we have the potential to bolster that locally produced gas figure to around 20 percent,” said Mr Fraser.
