SOUTHS TAKE DOWN CESSNOCK IN NEWCASTLE RUGBY LEAGUE

In the Newcastle Rugby League competition, Wests have maintained top spot with a narrow win over Kurri.

In other games Lakes hammered Central and Souths beat Cessnock.

The visiting Goannas opened the scoring with a try out wide.

Souths responded as Willie Heta’s kick fell kindly for Steve Widders.

The sides traded tries .. Foran kicked for Marvin Filipo to score under the posts.

Heta combined with second rower Jake Lawrence to get the Lions back in it.

Foran was heavily involved again as Reed Hugo grabbed Cessnock’s third.

But from there the Lions took control.

Heta and Lawrence worked a move to help Jarrod Flanagan score.

Tim Christie produced a solo effort to extend the lead for Souths.

Not to be outdone Widders grabbed an intercept as the Lions raced away to win.
