NEWCASTLE RUGBY LEAGUE DRAW UNVEILED

Returning to league, and the draw for the Newcastle competition has been released. The 2019 season is set to kick off on April 13, with reigning champions Souths away to Central. The Lions will face beaten grand finalists Lakes United in round three at Townson Oval. The decider is scheduled to take place on Sunday, September 22. (VISION ONLY)

CENTRAL BEATS CESSNOCK AS NEWCASTLE LEAGUE FINALS TAKE SHAPE

In Newcastle Rugby League, Central has finished second on the ladder after outclassing Cessnock 36 points to 16 in the final round. Trailing 14-nil at half time, the Goannas got back into the contest after the break, as Joe Woodbury scooped up the ball and raced 90 metres to score. But the Butcher Boys put the result beyond doubt as Simon Williams waltzed through the Cessnock defence. Central’s win means Kurri makes the finals in fifth, with Lakes, Souths and Maitland making up the top four.

SOUTHS CLAIM FIRST WIN FOR 2018 IN NEWCASTLE RUGBY LEAGUE

Returning to league and in round four of the Newcastle competition, Central beat the Bulldogs 26 points to 16, while in a major upset, Souths scored their first win this season, beating the Rosellas by the same score. Wests made a cracking start, as former Lions captain Matt Shipway drew first blood against his old team. It didn’t take long for the visitors to edge further in front.. Before South’s hit back. And they weren’t finished yet. The Lions looked unstoppable as they powered towards the break. Producing a little bit of magic before half time. Souths held Wests scoreless in the final forty, while locking down their first competition points this season.

NEWCASTLE SENT PACKING AT RUGBY LEAGUE COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS

Newcastle has been sent packing from rugby league’s Country Championships. The men’s side was dusted up 44 to 16 by the North Coast. The visitors racing out to a 22-nil lead early in the first half, leaving the new-look rep side, now comprised of players from the Newcastle and Hunter competition, playing catch-up. The ladies league tag team was also eliminated, going down 20 to 6, at the hands of the Central Coast.

PAUL CARTER FREE TO PLAY FOR CESSNOCK

To local league and Cessnock’s Kurt Warden is facing three weeks on the sideline after being charged for a dangerous tackle in the Goanna’s big loss to Maitland. Meanwhile former NRL player Paul Carter is free to play against Kurri Kurri. Carter was reported for a high shot on the Pickers’ Jarrod Smith early in the second half, but the judiciary found there wasn’t enough evidence to charge him.   Note: no audio
