A spear-fishing trip at Port Stephens this afternoon became a full-blown rescue operation, when a man was accidentally shot with a speargun.
A companion supported the 24-year-old in the water, off Tomaree headland at Shoal Bay, until help arrived.
With the spear still embedded in his torso, the man was picked up by a rescue boat, transferred to an ambulance, then to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.
He was flown to Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital where he’s in a stable condition.
