A fire at a Nelson Bay home yesterday afternoon has caused about $400,000 worth of damage, after an occupant attempted to light a combustion stove.
About 5.45pm a 36-year-old male lit a fire in the stove of the Galoola Drive premises when the carpet became ignited.
The man then attempted to extinguish the flames but was forced to flee the house due to thick smoke.
Two women and two children managed to escape unharmed.
There appears to be no suspicious circumstances.
