BINGARA REMEMBERS THE FALLEN

Today marked the 53rd anniversary of Bingara’s unique orange picking ceremony.
The tradition commemorates fallen Diggers who served during World War I and II, and is the only memorial of its kind in Australia.
Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall was on hand to pick the first orange, and then it was up to the town’s eager school children to seek out the rest.

“Why do you think picking oranges today is so important? Because it’s the last day of school and it’s for the soldiers what passed away.”

“Because it’s a special day. And why is it so special? Because it’s orange picking day.”

“Because they planted the orange trees when a person died in the war.”

The town’s orange festival parade will take place on July 13.
