Newcastle City Council approved plans to build a 24-hour rail maintenance facility at Carrington last night.

The Elizabeth Street proposal did receive objections from the public including increased traffic, contamination and its proximity to residential areas.

Noise was also a major issue for objectors, with Workshop 1 seeking approval for unrestricted hours of work for wheel lathe operations, grinding, metal fabrication, machining and shunting.

However, more than 80 restrictions were imposed including limiting workshop operations on most days between 7am and 10pm and the construction of a 5.5 metre acoustic wall along Elizabeth Street.

The council voted eight to three to approve the $4-million development that includes extending a rail spur line on the site and building three workshops.
