NEWCASTLE ART GALLERY PLANS SHELVED

Plans to redevelop the Newcastle Art Gallery have been shelved with councillors voting to put development plans on hold until it’s finances are in a better position.

In last night’s council meeting, councillors voted 7-6 to put the $21-million development on the backburner until council achieved its operating surplus.

During the meeting council also requested that the Lord Mayor lead a delegation to the NSW Premier requesting $7-million.

It comes just days after the NSW Premier suggested the Government didn’t have the $7 million needed for the art gallery project

“Money does not grow on trees, the mint in Macquarie Street in Sydney closed many years ago, if we don’t have it we can’t spend it.” Mr O’Farrell said on Monday.

We’ll have a full report and reactions to the decision in NBN News tonight at 6.
