11-time world champion Kelly Slater has downed current champion Joel Parkinson to win the season opening world championship event on the Gold Coast.
In solid conditions at Kirra Point, Slater scored 18.56 to Parkinson’s 17.47. One one wave Slater scored a near perfect 9.83.
Both surfers are expected to fight it out all year for the crown.
The tour now moves south for the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach.
