AIR CONDITIONING MALFUNCTION AT MAITLAND HOSPITAL
Nurses and patients at Maitland Hospital sweltered through Tuesday’s scorcher, after the air conditioning failed.
Today, that sparked a visit from the State Opposition, which is putting the heat on the government to install a new system.

The reporter says, “Maitland Hospital’s air conditioning malfunctioned in Tuesday’s heat, causing some surgeries to be rescheduled.” This is incorrect. She should’ve said, “”Maitland Hospital’s air conditioning malfunctioned in Tuesday’s heat, causing some surgerery to be rescheduled.”
In this case, “surgery” is a mass noun & is not countable.
Miriam Webster has already done a shocking job of “simplifying” English (it’s called American). I do see a need to use our braincells & preserve the Queens English. We will be a lot smarter for it.
