RAIL LINE STALLING CBD DEVELOPMENT

A decision on the rail line is holding up development in Newcastle’s CBD – that was the message delivered to Newcastle councillors last night.

The Director of Landcom, Sean O’Toole told council that the rail line was stopping them from moving forward with development in the CBD.

He said neither Landcom nor GPT would proceed with any planning for their developments until the NSW Government made a decision on the rail line.
Meanwhile council also voted to tear some of the city’s eyesores.

Council last night approved the demolition of five buildings in the Civic precinct.

•The Civic Arcade

•The Shortland Electricity Arcade

• The Civic Hotel

• The Performing Arts of Newcastle (PAN)

•419 Hunter Street which is a commercial premise

The University of Newcastle campus has been proposed for the site, but that won’t happen until there’s a financial committment from the Federal Government.
