FIRE FIGHTERS KEEP CLOSE WATCH ON LAKE FIRE

Firefighters will remain at the scene of a fire at Lake Macquarie, that last night threatened properties in the suburb of Teralba.

120 firefighters from the Rural Fire Service and Fire Rescue New South Wales conducted back burning to protect homes at Barnsley and Edgeworth.

They were aided by a cool southerly change which blew through the area around 11pm.

Earlier in the day temperatures reached the mid 30s and the fire was assisted by a stiff north westerly wind. It burnt out around 200 hectares of scrub land.

With little rain over the past two months conditions are extremely dry. Chief Superintendent of the Rural Fire Service Bob Murray says all residents need to take the current conditions seriously.

“If you have not already prepared for the bush fire season, then you must act now,” said Chief Superintendant Murray.

“Everyone should be using this time to prepare their properties, such as clearing their gutters and removing fuel from around their homes.

“All households should have a Bush Fire Survival Plan, so residents know what to do, particularly on days of increased fire danger.

“There is no room for complacency when it comes to bush fire safety,” Chief Superintendant Murray said.

A water bombing aircraft will be brought in today to put out small fires burning in inaccessable places in the fire zone.
