JAPANESE SUBMARINE ATTACK ON NEWCASTLE REMEMBERED

70 years ago, the second world war arrived in spectacular fashion on Newcastle’s doorstep.
The Japanese submarine I-21 unleashed a barrage of shells that landed all over the city.
For the first time, new computer animations give us the most realistic picture yet of how the dramatic attack unfolded, and how the men manning Newcastle’s guns famously fought back.

  1. That was a great presentation, and until last week did not know that Newcastle had been attacked. David Threflo deserves an award.

  2. More needs to be done telling our young people what happened during the War.
    Great very interesting.

  3. A great production and accurate account of what really happened. I recommend a visit to Fort Scratchley to feel and see the real thing from where it all happened.

  4. Fort Scratchley has some wonderful history hidden away there. If only the walls there could talk . I am one of the volunteer researches and the stories that have been found and information that is there especially to do with the 8th June 1942 from actual diary notes of the commandant in charge is very descriptive.

I recommend that you visit Fort Scratchley for yourself and talk to some of the people who are there you will be surprised what is out there…

  5. What a great story on Newcastle’s historical past. One of the houses shelled at Parnell Place was owned by my grandparents Vassilios and Anastasia Tsolakis, number 24. My grandparents, and their two sons, my father Paul and godfather Michael were in their house on that night.Your story brings out those factsI I was told as a young boy by my grandfather. The front wall still has the schrapnel marks in it. If you ever visit Newcastle a walk around that area is a real eye opener. From Newcastle Beach, via Parnell Place, Fort Scratchley to Nobby’s Beach and then the harbour. You will love the views.
