5 YEARS ON – PASHA BULKER AND JUNE FLOODS

Five years on and it’s still a day Newcastle will never forget – the terrible storm that swept the Pasha Bulker onto Nobbys Beach and caused flash flooding across Newcastle

Unlike any other storm the region has experienced, the 2007 June storms took nine lives, left a billion dollar repair bill and drew media attention from far and wide.

The 4000 tonne coal ship was sitting off the coast, waiting to enter the harbour, when the ferocious storm drove it ashore.

There was a daring operation to rescue the 22 crew on board, who were airlifted by brave Westpac Rescue Helicopter airmen through gale force winds and driving rain.

As if that wasn’t enough drama, there were chaotic scenes across the suburbs of Newcastle that Friday afternoon, as people who had just finished work were caught in flash flooding.

NBN News was there and we’ve pulled out some of our stories to show how it all unfolded.
