Lennox Head’s Adam Melling has finished fifth at the Rio Pro, his best result so far on the 2016 World Tour.
The 31-year-old eliminated Michel Bourez in his round five heat to book a quarterfinal berth against Gabriel Medina.
But the Brazilian stole the show, with Melling only able to produce a two-wave total of 6.
The result moves him 24th overall.
