LAMAN STREET FIG DEBACLE DRAWS IN NEW GROUP

Fears the Laman Street figs would face the chainsaws again today proved unfounded, with contractors noticeably absent.

But the fig debacle has drawn in another group, with a local Baptist congregation cut off from their church’s grand entry, ahead of a special celebration.

  1. OMG,

Council should be sacked. The protestors should have a good hard look at themselves. $1 Million dollars could fund a lot of cancer surgery and shorten the waiting list on which I’m on. What is a tree compared to your own life???

Stop waisting money please so it’s not too late for what we really need the money for.

  2. Why have a go at the protesters everyone knows there is nothing wrong with the figs the council just want to pretty the art gallery up to make more money and seriously do you think it cost 1 million dollars ? The problem has always been the council .. That 1 million dollars would not have gone to cancer surgery anyway its not even on councils agenda .. seriously the emotion for cancer is .. A form of self destruction. NOT CHANGING CONCEPT or CONCEPTS in the area that is affected .. seriously try and save some tree’s feels amazing to be part of a worthwhile cause .. saving a tree’s life may let other earth save yours … God can save your life and God made the tree’s … Good luck though … x

  3. Could this be another attempt to demonize the trees and their supporters?

A simple solution would have been to move the chain link barricade slightly to allow passage. Those fences are held in place by weight blocks at their base for ease of maneuvering.

This is some of the same mentality that would destroy a treasure rather than test its viability.

  4. The frustating and annoying thing about this WHOLE SAGA is that the SEVEN Councillors who want to give these MAGNIFICENT HEALTHY trees the chop, ( Including Mr Scott Sharpe of Sharpes Nurseries….How Ironic ! ) are postponing the Independant Assessment, ONLY so they can work out how to save their own backs AND STILL get the RESULT THEY WANT !!!
Why else would they be absurd enough to spend Twenty Thousand Dollars a day…..yes $20,000 a day, on 24Hour Security and Security fencing ?
No justification for their INSANITY !!!

Oh and if this INSANE tree removal does go ahead, wonder if Sharpes Nursery will have an influx of Bark Chip for sale ???
    I feel a BOYCOTT coming on !

  5. I feel it would be VERY interesting for NBN to find out why the trees on Laman Street, where the council plans to build an ‘open’ mall (for want of better words) are apparently so dangerous, yet all others in civic park seem fantastically healthy?
Also, what about the other parks with fig trees?
Can NBN please investigate the likelihood of the figs at Smith park, Gregson park, Birdwood park or the park on the corner of Donald street and Chatham rd having to be cut down due to the very sudden onset of the same mystery… um… illness?
    Death? Sickness?
What IS wrong with them anyway?

    P.S.
OMG, I truely DO sympathise with you and yes we can ALL think of far better things for the council to be spending ratepayers money on.
By the way… do YOU know whats wrong with the trees?

  6. For the cost of one day’s security the Council could have paid for the independent assesment of the tree’s safety which is all that has been asked for.

Why on earth chop down a beautiful tourist asset for the city and something that makes Laman St unique when arborists say there is no evidence the trees are dangerous?

Why spend all this money on destruction when not necessary? If it aint broke dont wreck it!

Why are some in council blocking independent assesment, is there another agenda?

If that other agenda was the dollars from the Laman St development which has not Figs in the pictures, why was that not put to DA rather than pretend imminently dangerous trees needing Road and Traffic act to cut down?. (an act used for branches hanging over roads , a complete MISUSE of legislation).

Why have people in Newcastle been lied to? Why is the street pathway shut? If it is for safety why are the security not wearing hard hats?

Or is it a Qantas like tactic to annoy all the public and muddy the waters!?

Why have we been decieved? Truth is our sword and our shield?

Where is open honest government that is meant to listen to the bggest petition ever in Newcastle?

Where is the search for truth in this?
