The crew of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter used night-vision goggles to help locate a man who had fallen out of a small boat in Newcastle’s Fullerton Cove last night.
Two men were plunged into chilly waters when their tinnie capsized just before midnight. One managed to swim to shore but the other, aged in his 20s, scrambled into a tree in the middle of the waterway.
Rescuers say the use of night vision goggles greatly reduced the search time.
When winched aboard the helicopter the patient was already suffering hypothermia and shock.
