FIGS TO FENCES: ANOTHER DEBATE

Furious debate over the future of Newcastle’s Laman Street figs, has turned to frustration over the fences strung up to contain them.

The Lord Mayor is so fed up, he’s going to force a council vote on the issue tomorrow night.

  1. thankgoodness this issue is being addressed! this unsightly fence has been a social & civic impedement for far too long. all those weddings, formals, art gallery attendances & library use down. Council staff responsible should be ashamed of themselves. & what is with that carnie folk caravan work site at the end of beloved Laman St? For goodness sake its the Civic precinct & Anzac memorial, show some respect!.

  2. The whole safety debate about Laman St has been based on misinformation.
    The original report condemning the trees was called into question when the arborist who wrote the report on the figs stated in his affidavit to the Land and Environment court that he was given incorrect information by council officers. He and other experts were told that there had been tree failures in the Pasha Bulker storm when there was nothing of the sort. You have to wonder whether the fences are just face-saving or vindictiveness on the part of council management.
