Despite a lone bid to save it, the old Empire Hotel on Hunter Street will be demolished early next year, ridding Newcastle of one of its worst eyesores.
The building has fallen into disrepair since it was closed seven years ago.
The state government purchased the site last month for $2.3 million and plans to turn it into 10,000 square metres of office space.
