Bulldozers could start within a fortnight to clear the way for the $1.7-billion Hunter Expressway.
Today workers began removing power poles along the 14-kilometre eastern section.
The federal government says four homes standing in the path of the project have now been acquired.
The expressway is expected to be finished by the end of 2013.
